Beauvoir sur Mer
The Passage du Gois is the only submersible road linking the continent to Ile de Noirmoutier at low tide. Admire this stunning site and take a deep breath of fresh sea air. It’s fascinating to stay near the banks and watch the 4.150km road disappear in a matter of hours as the sea rises. Fishermen love to come shellfish gathering at the Gois. You must follow these rules:
- Only cross the road at low tide (you can cross 90 minutes before and after low tide).
- Carefully follow signs and safety rules displayed on the edges of the site.
Endless marshland unfurls around Beauvoir-sur-Mer, icons of hard-won land and the battle between man and sea. The freshwater and salt marshes are interlinked by a network of channels which, in the lock keeper’s expert hands, enables the required salt water to enter the salt marshes and oyster farms on the coast.
